Trump’s odds decline for 8th straight week, maintains large lead; Warren announces exploratory committee; Romney’s odds jump on criticism of Trump; Kamala Harris to announce next?

Donald Trump’s Odds declined for the 8th straight week, this time from 2.83X to 2.86X. These are his lowest odds in over 300 days. He remains more than 2.7X as likely to win as the next candidate. This week’s news was around the government shutdown heading into its second week with no end in sight and the Democratic Congress starting its session. Trump’s net approval has seen a significant drop in the last three weeks from around -9% to the current -12%.

The big candidate news on the week was Elizabeth Warren announcing a 2020 presidential exploratory committee. She became the first major Democratic Candidate to make the announcement. Her odds jumped from 23.2X to 16.6X. That allowed her to jump over Bernie Sanders for 5th place overall. She has been as high as 2nd overall before hot new names like Kamala Harris and Beto O’Rourke appeared.

With Warren’s announcement, speculation quickly moved to who will announce next. Kamala Harris will be on the Late Show on January 10th. Will she announce then? The odds certainly point to her running. She improved slightly from 7.84X to 7.79X. That was enough for her to jump over Beto O’Rourke and to get back to second place overall. She was last in second place 4 weeks ago.

Mitt Romney wrote an op-ed critical of Trump on Tuesday and followed it up on Wednesday saying he will not run in 2020 against Trump. The publicity raised his odds from 85.7X to 78.0X, his highest in nearly 100 days. He is now in 25th place up from 29th place.
